Moving right along

June 4, 2006

Fond the other day that my colleagues in Learning Technologies are introducing some new toys for us to play with at the university.

First off, there's a new service on the intranet for all us Information Services folks to use, including work-based blogs, news service, wiki-based document repository and so on. It's been a long time coming but great to see at last that "new" web technologies are wheedling their way into everyday use. If it's good enough for the rest of the world, it's good enough for us.

Second, they are opening up some community-based services (a la mySpace and Bebo, but for students and staff only) to save students having to go outside to third-party sites for their social networking. This is to include publicly-acessible blogs too, (not sure, but this may even be hosted on a local WordPress installation).

Anyway, it shows that they have their eye on the world and are moving right along with it to give students and staff the services they need (or at least want) in the web 2.0 world (TM O'Reilly Inc). I probably need to spend some time (hah, got loads of that spare, NOT!) meditating on what we in Admin Computing might need to do to catch up, keep up or contribute.

Exciting times. I'm quite glad I started this blog now, so at least I know a little of what it's all about. Just hope they get a really good search on it all so we can find all this stuff that people will be publishing!
