Sublime slogan

February 9, 2007

I’ve never watched the BBC’s Life on Mars drama about a police detective who travels mysteriously back in time to the 1970s, but it returns soon for a new series with the wonderful strapline “back in the nick of time”.

To cover the cultural bases for my reader overseas, I should point out that “nick” is a UK slang term for a Police Station or prison, so back (new series), in the nick (in the Police Station)  of time (travelled back in time). Geddit? And “back in the nick of time” meaning “back just in time”.

Let us imagine for a moment the surge of joy that must have stirred the mind of the person who thought that up when s/he realised how perfect it was. I bet they couldn’t stop talking about it and telling it to their friends, going “Isn’t that great?”. Well, yes it is. Add that to the list of things I wish I’d thought of.

Beautiful. Another doff of well-doffed cap to whoever created it.
